Operations that run a few days generate the same paperwork as long ones, usually in scattered spreadsheets and folders. Chat Ops keeps subjects, assignments, and documentation together from the first day to the after-action.
What it handles
- Subject and case records
- Structured records for each subject and case, with photos and supporting material attached where they belong instead of in a shared drive.
- Assignments
- Who is working what, visible to the people running the operation, so coverage gaps show up during the operation rather than after it.
- Deconfliction
- Checks within the operation that flag overlap between investigators before it becomes a problem.
- Briefing documents
- Generates the briefing and summary paperwork an operation needs from the records already entered, rather than retyping them.
- Backup and recovery
- Built-in backup of the case store, integrity checks, and recovery tools for when a drive or a folder goes missing mid-operation.
- Encryption at rest
- Optional AES-256 encryption of the case database, with the key held in the Windows credential store.
Per-user sign-in with offline two-factor authentication is planned for a future release and is not in the current version.
Where the data lives
On your equipment. Chat Ops stores its case data in a folder you choose: a local drive, a network share, or agency-managed storage if that is where your records already live. Nothing is sent to us, and there is no vendor-hosted copy of your cases.
That is deliberate. A vendor holding criminal justice information is a vendor inside your CJIS footprint, with everything that follows. This tool is built so we never touch it.
Requirements and pricing
Chat Ops installs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 and is designed to run on the field laptops agencies already have. Requirements, documentation and pricing will be released to verified agency personnel when it becomes available.
